A Resolution Honoring NIDCR’s 75th Anniversary Passed in U.S. Senate! The United States Senate introduced and passed with unanimous support a resolution recognizing NIDCR’s 75th anniversary that hailed “its critical role in improving the dental, oral, and craniofacial health of the United States through research, training, and the dissemination of health information.”

Senate Resolution 605 was introduced by Sen. Ben Cardin and cosponsored by Sen. Mike Braun. In the United States House, Rep. Brian Babin, a dentist, introduced a similar version of the anniversary resolution (H.Res.1078)

The Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) and the Orland Bethel Family Musculoskeletal Research Center (BMRC) have joined together to offer a fellowship to early career scientists. The ORS/BMRC Fellowship prioritizes support of early career scientists to produce breakthrough treatments for musculoskeletal ailments. The program will support the generation of critical preliminary data for larger grant applications, leading to breakthrough treatments for musculoskeletal diseases.

Two levels of fellowship support are currently available to support translational basic science and clinical musculoskeletal research: $20,000 awards for postdoctoral scholars or medical residents, and $30,000 awards for junior faculty members.

Eligibility

  • Postdoctoral scholars/residents must have completed a PhD, MD, or DO degree within five years of the application date (approved institutional leaves of absence excluded).
  • Junior faculty (research assistant professor, assistant professor, or equivalent) must be within five years of starting their first faculty position (approved institutional leaves of absence excluded). Faculty should also have not received grants totaling more than $75,000/year in direct research support.
  • Applicants must verify that they have legal work status in the United States and that all research will be performed in laboratories located in the United States.

Congratulations to ITP Principal Investigator and University of Michigan School of Dentistry faculty member Dr. Isabelle Lombaert on receiving $500,000 in a  major funding award! Dr. Lombaert is one of the 2023 recipients of the University of Michigan Medical School’s Frankel Innovation Initiative Award, a research fund that supports the development of life-saving therapies and innovative new technologies at U-M. Dr. Lombaert’s project, “Non-viral Gene Therapy to Treat Xerostomia,” was chosen from several proposals during three selection stages.

Foreign Disclosure Requirements for SBIR/STTR Applications Received on/after September 5, 2023

When the SBIR, STTR, and related pilot programs were reauthorized for FY2023-2025, the SBIR and STTR Extension Act of 2022 made several changes to the SBIR and STTR programs. Policy changes were announced June 12 through this Notice: Implementation of the NIH SBIR and STTR Foreign Disclosure Pre-award and Post-Award Requirements (NOT-OD-23-139).

Key elements include:

  • disclosure requirements regarding ties to foreign countries,
  • a requirement for federal agencies that manage SBIR and STTR programs to establish a due diligence program to assess security risks posed by applicants, and
  • denial of award and recovery authority provisions when ties to foreign countries of concern pose a significant risk.

This policy applies to all NIH, CDC, FDA, and ACL competing applications for SBIR or STTR funding on or after September 5, 2023. More information and resources will be provided in the near future.

Abstract submission for our Joint Large Clinical Grant program is open now. From September 1 until November 15, 2023, abstracts by well-established researchers/research-groups with a clinical focus on oral maxillofacial tissue regeneration topics are being accepted. Up to 350,000 Swiss francs will be awarded to the successful project.

With this grant, the Osteology Foundation continues the successful collaboration with the Peter and Annemarie Geistlich-Stucki Foundation to address sound clinical research questions in the field of oral and maxillofacial tissue regeneration.

The Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) is seeking applications for Research Interest Groups (RIGs) to take place at the ORS 2024 Annual Meeting, February 2-6, 2024.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING APPLICATION: Friday, August 11, 2023

Purpose of Research Interest Groups (RIGs)

RIGs foster the thoughtful exchange of ideas within the global multi-disciplinary community of the ORS by providing the opportunity to engage in informative, transformative, and live discussion with colleagues in a specific area of musculoskeletal research, whether basic, applied, or clinical. To explore content that is complementary or different to the ORS Annual Meeting, RIGs are encouraged to focus on unique approaches, methodologies, diseases, or connections that inspire brainstorming across our multi-disciplinary groups.

RIG Guidelines:

  • Organizers must be ORS members in good standing
  • The ORS does not provide funding for RIG organizers or speakers.
  • Abstracts submitted and accepted for presentation (podium) at the ORS 2024 Annual Meeting are prohibited from being presented during a RIG

 What is Expected from the Organizers of RIGs: 

  • A written plan for the content, focus, and target audience of the RIG
  • Names of all organizers and speakers
  • A post-RIG report on the attendance, its scientific relevance, and summary of next steps (if any)

 What Organizers of RIGs Can Expect from ORS:

  • A review of the content / focus of the proposed RIG with final approval
  • Support from ORS in regard to logistics and promotion
  • Feedback/support after their event (if any)
  • Support from ORS in regard to logistics, promotion, and evaluation

If you are interested in organizing a RIG at the ORS 2024 Annual Meeting, please complete the application at https://ors.memberclicks.net/rig24 and upload it per the instructions, by Friday, August 11, 2023. RIGS are scheduled in order of request and will be scheduled to ensure there are no conflicts with the main Scientific Program.

The Michelson Philanthropies & Science Prize for Immunology focuses on transformative research in human immunology, with trans-disease applications to accelerate vaccine and immunotherapeutic discovery. This international prize is intended to encourage and support young investigators from a wide range of disciplines, including computer science, artificial intelligence/machine learning, protein engineering, nanotechnology, genomics, parasitology and tropical medicine, neurodegenerative diseases, and gene editing, who apply their expertise to perform research that has a lasting impact on vaccine and immunotherapy. The prize will be awarded annually to one young scientist (35 years of age or younger) based on work done in the past 3 years.

The winner of the Michelson Philanthropies & Science Prize for Immunology is awarded US $30,000 and publication of his or her essay in Science. The essay and those of the finalists are also published on Science Online.

RevBio is Awarded a $2 Million Grant to Advance the Development of its Novel Dental Adhesive Bone Scaffold Product!

RevBio, Inc., announced that it has been awarded a $2 million Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This funding (1R44DE032564-01) will allow the company to complete the pre-clinical research necessary to advance this product into the clinical stage of development.

The Bosarge Family Foundation-Waun Ki Hong Scholar Award for Regenerative Cancer Medicine is a $120,000 grant over two years to support postdoctoral or clinical research fellows to conduct highly novel and provocative research in the field of regenerative cancer medicine and to establish a successful career path in this field. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research is pleased to announce that applications for its Dental Public Health Research Fellowship program are now open. The three-year fellowship includes a 12-month full-time residency in dental public health (DPH), followed by a 24-month full-time postdoctoral fellowship with a strong focus on oral health research.

Individuals successfully completing the 12-month DPH residency component will receive a certificate of completion and are qualified educationally to apply for examination by the American Board of Dental Public Health for specialty certification.
